2013 Hairstyles

2013 hairstyles: 2013 haircuts & hair trends.

More personal than even the clothes we wear, the haircut and colour we choose says much about us. And, like our clothing, much of that comes down to what's in fashion each season as well as what suits us best. From the haircuts to get in 2013 through to the best styles to wear them with, read on for our 2013 hair trends guide.

The hairstyles and haircuts we wear evolve with each passing year, just as the clothes we wear evolve. Following 2013′s fashion trends, it’s no big surprise that the most popular hair trends are the ones that are the most effortless: busy lifestyles and a desire for versatility puts complex hairstyles on the backburner, while classics with a twist prove the most popular weapons in our 2013 hairstyle arsenal.
That said, there’s no reason your 2013 haircut or 2013 hair colour can’t be bold or make a statement. The question, then, is what kind of statement you want to make.
After the break, the key 2013 hairstyles and 2013 hair trends that are shaping the year.

Women’s spring 2013 hair trends

1. The low ponytail: a statement to style in 2013

Ponytails are a constant hairstyle – they’re never out. But so many of 2013′s hairstyles are built upon these evergreens, reinterpreting them into new and relevant styles.
From the hassle-free to the sumptuous, from the daytime to the evening, the low ponytail is amongst
the hairstyles to master for your spring 2013 fashion repertoire. But not any low ponytail will suffice.

2 Done but undone: messy up-dos for spring

Up dos have always been a big part of the evolution of hairstyles. While wearing your hair down gives of a more feminine vibe, up dos allow you to highlight your face or the neckline of the dress that you are wearing. For this season, the up do is given a more relaxed makeover by being messy and undone. This look was seen all over the runways of the different fashion weeks and is a sure win on the list of 2013 hair trends for spring.
There’s something about hair being a little “undone” that’s sexy. Sleek, straight and other well-done hairstyles can have the tendency to look uptight as opposed to a hairstyle that’s on the messy side. As we see the models walk down the catwalk for shows like Vera Wang, Donna Karan, Badgley Mischka and many more, we notice how approachable they look with their respective hairstyles.

3. 1960s inspired hair: the bouffant & beyond

Dynamic is one word that best describes the sixties. Ridden with a lot of change, this was an era that can be considered as a turning point. When we hear 1960s, we are immediately reminded of hippies, feminism, gay rights and so much more: this is probably why, fashion-wise, this era has been a constant source of inspiration and continues to be as 1960s fashion lingers as a trend.
Another thing about the 60s that made its mark is the hairstyles women wore. One example of a style that continues to resonate is the bouffant: the big and volumized hair can be considered as a reflection of the empowerment of women during this era. And while the decade had a number of defining hairstyles, it’s the bouffant styles that 2013 is most fixated on.

4. Tomboy hairstyles to rock right now

Much like fashion trends, the hair trends of 2013 have been strongly influenced by the styles on the runway. And in our numerous interviews with hair teams backstage at the shows, particular words have been bandied about again and again, a common thread of inspiration between shows in every city. One of those words was tomboy. Boyish, another. Stemming from 2012 and carrying into spring 2013′s hairstyles, it’s hard to ignore the amount of effortless, cool, boyish hairstyles dominating the runways and the streets.

5. The half-tuck: a simple yet significant hairstyle trend

Sometimes it’s the little things that count. The attention to detail; the finish on a fingernail, the fastening of a button, the way the hair is tucked behind the ear…
You might not even think that the latter is significant enough to be called a hairstyle, let alone a hair trend. But sometimes the biggest trends are defined by the smallest things, and this is one of those times.
Hair tucked behind the ear? No: hair half tucked behind the ear.

6. Going platinum: white blonde hair colour

If it has ever been out of fashion I don’t remember it, which is another way of saying that platinum blonde is a hair colour trend in 2013. With Ruby Jean Wilson as the trend’s most recent poster girl, it’s the perfect shade for channeling the retro, 1960s Factory Girl sentiment of the season.
So if you are going to change your hair colour, if you’re going to opt for a colour that shall set you apart from the crowd, consider a shock of blonde hair that draws the gaze of those nearby, consider the platinum blonde hair shade.

7. Side part hairstyles: how to wear them now

It seems odd to describe a particular hair parting as ‘in’ – day to day most women will part their hair to suit the way it falls naturally or to compliment the hairstyle that was imparted to them upon their last visit to a hair salon. In a world of ‘whatever works best’, centre-parts rule. But for those of us for whom fashion is part of who we are, ‘whatever works best’ isn’t good enough. If you’re in such fashionable company, it’s likely that you don’t follow fashion trends but rather understand them, appreciate them, accept them or reject them and, if it’s the former, personalise them and make them an extension of your own individual style.
Style is what it boils down to. Statements too. And when it comes to making a statement of 2013′s hairstyles, particularly spring 2013′s hair trends, it’s going to be hard to overlook the side-part.

Side parted hairstyles.

Wear it left, right, up, down, wet, dry, when you’re in a hurry or taking your time… Wear it if you have short hair or long hair. It matters not. The side part is not only 2013′s statement parting, it’s also its universal one. It goes without saying that if you have hair, you can part it to the side – even the tightest of curls will be receptive to a side part provided the right hair product is used. But as universal as this parting is, 2013′s take on it isn’t about just any side part. It is, instead, about a few standout hairstyles. Read on for a guide to each of them, along with how to guides for a variety of women’s side part hairstyles.

8. The fringe / bangs: fringed hairstyles for the coming year

Trends can sweep in as if on an unstoppable avalanche, changing the landscape entirely (until they run their cycle); such is what the fringe (bangs) did back in 2007. But it doesn’t have to end there. Some can drift on, lingering, having smaller bursts of renewed vigor. That’s what the fringe has done – and this year it stays on as a 2013 hairstyle of choice.

The fringe: how has it changed?

So the number one question you may be asking is, if the fringe never really went away, how has it changed for 2013? The answer is, it hasn’t really. It’s still best worn thick, blunt, and long (sweeping the top of the eyes preferably). And it’s still best worn in one of the following ways:
  • with a messy, textured, neo-bohemian, grungy edge (see the indie fringe)
  • with an aura of ’60s sex-kitten nonchalance (think Francoise Hardy or Jane Birkin)
  • swept haphazardly with a little peek-a-boo curtain a la Brigitte Bardot

Hair cuts to wear with a fringe

The bob with bangs

When we talk about fringed bobs its easy to think of 1920s style cuts like the Louise Brooks. But while 1920s fashion has been on and off the trend map, short sharp flapper cuts are not on top of the list this year. Instead it’s about an adaptable bob cut that can be styled in any number of ways, from a modern effortless look to a ’60s mod bob.
For 2013 the biggest trend for bangs is to pair them with a chin-length or shoulder-length bob. Models like Karlie Kloss and Edie Campbell have already made the dramatic change to bobbed hairstyles with bangs, with modern, slightly choppy and textured styles.

Long hair with bangs

This rather goes without saying: bangs are perfect for hair shoulder length or longer, particularly when hair is naturally straight or with a slight wave. So while the bob is the most on-trend pairing for a fringe in 2013, long hair with bangs is still a style to opt for if you don’t want to go for an all-over shorter hairstyle.
